A strong self-image and self-esteem are particularly important when success requires success under pressure and in public. Individuals with a strong and positive self-image are better able to withstand the stress of pressurised situations, recover more quickly from setbacks and optimise their performance. This is why developing an individual’s self-image is an essential part of holistic coaching. When mental coaching is integrated with other coaching, the basis for success and achievement is created. How can self-image and self-esteem be developed?
One of the key gifts of mental coaching is the development of self-confidence and self-esteem. It is a step-by-step process of first reflecting, then practicing not only cognition, but also desirable ways of reacting and behaving. Systematic repetition is important. Here are some effective methods to get you started
Improving self-reflection and self-esteem
– Write down your successes and developments.
– Consider how you react under pressure and what thoughts you have when you do.
– Reflect on past successes: what things could be repeated?
Positive inner speech
– Replace negative talk, thoughts, with just supportive and realistic beliefs.
– Repeat affirming phrases such as ”I’m ready.”, ”I can do this”, ”This is my thing.” etc.
– Review your successes: what was going through your mind at the time?
Mental training and visualisation
– Practise the right kind of visualisation training in conjunction with normal workouts.
– Focus on successes, replay them in your mind
– See yourself succeeding under pressure.
Gradual exposure to pressure
– You learn to compete by competing.
– Practice high quality training in competitive conditions.
– Create situations in training where you have to manage stress.
Setting targets
– Set realistic and achievable goals (SMART).
– Make use of sensory experiences when dictating goals to the brain
– Celebrate even small steps forward so that you experience continuous improvement.
Get support and feedback
– Get a support network around you, such as coaches, teammates and mental coaches.
– Receive feedback and use it to improve.
– Be your own best friend.
A good self-image and self-esteem are highlighted in a pressurized situation. Individuals who invest in mental training develop not only their self-confidence but also their ability to remain calm and focused in critical moments. The development of self-image and self-esteem occurs gradually and through consistent practice. The tools of mental coaching can be applied to all aspects of life.
